The Cairns-Kuranda Rail |
Passing the Stoney Creek Falls |
The Cairns-Kuranda Rail took five years of arduous labour to build and was opened in 1891. It was constructed to enable transportation of supplies in the wet summer season to the tin miners who worked near Herberton and who would otherwise have starved. The wages paid for most of this time were 80 cents a day but eight months before completion, the workers received a five cents a day rise! |
The 34km Cairns-Kuranda Scenic Railway takes you past waterfalls (Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls which are at their best in the wet season), through gorges, fifteen hand made tunnels, lots of rainforest and over many bridges. After one hour and forty minutes, you'll be pleasantly delighted on arrival at Kuranda station. |
Barron Gorge in the dry season |
After a stroll around Kuranda you may opt to return to Cairns on the Sky Rail. The 2000 Olympic Torch even had a go on it but sadly I haven't yet! |
