Hervey Bay and the Urangan Pier |
The ever popular Urangan Pier |
When five small townships (Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan) grew together their product was the seaside city of Hervey Bay. On offer are several whale-watching cruises as well as ferry trips across the Great Sandy Strait to the World Heritage listed Fraser Island. |
Hervey Bay's Urangan Pier was originally opened on the 3rd of March, 1917 and was then 3690 feet long. Since its recent restoration, at 800 metres in length it may be slightly shorter than before, but nevertheless just as popular as ever. Stroll along the pier and you're bound to notice lots of people fishing. Some decent sized fish have been caught from here over the years as the list in the window of the closest bait and tackle shop will reveal. |

That's Fraser Island over yonder! |
Many pelicans and seagulls are always nearby and the western coastline of Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, dominates the view from the southern side of the pier. |
