Parliament House - the House in the Hill

Why not take a walk on Capital Hill?

Parliament House is located 'in' Capital Hill, Canberra.  The hill was dug out, the House built into the hole in the ground with most of the dirt being replaced either on or around the new building.  That means if you take a walk or run on Capital Hill you are actually running over Parliament House.

The Australian flag on the mast above is the size of the large side of a double-decker bus.  To see the flag it sure helps if the day is windy!

The colour schemes used in the House of Representatives and the Senate are modernised versions of their British counterparts.  They are more in keeping with the colours of Australia.

The new Parliament House was completed in May 1988 in time for our bi-centennial celebrations.  It was built to last 200 years whereas Old Parliament House was only meant to last for 60 years.  It is now the home of the National Portrait Gallery.
