The Blue Lake (or is it the grey lake?)

The (sometimes) Blue Lake

The Blue Lake in Mt Gambier is an awesome crater lake.  It is the most beautiful turquoise blue colour ... sometimes.  You see, this is a magical lake.  To see it blue you must be there between December and April, any later and it starts to fade and turns grey for the winter.  There is a pumping station tour available that can take you to the lake's surface.  Even though there are three other crater lakes close by, they do not possess the same mystical quality.

It's down all the way to the Umpherston Cave

The city of Mt Gambier is actually built around a cave.  The Cave Gardens, Engelbrecht Cave and Umpherston Cave are all found here.  The Umpherston Cave or Sink Hole as it is sometimes called, is free to visit and has barbecues and picnic tables.  Stairs take you right down into the open cave where you can walk between the beds of hydrangeas.

Hydrangeas in the cave

The Coonawarra wineries are only 50kms north of Mt Gambier (just in case you are looking for something else to do).
