Bellaggio

Church with bicycles inside

Picturesque Bellaggio, a small town in size but a capacious one in scenery, is situated on the southern shore of Lake Como very close to the Swiss border.  It looks like it's in a hole with high walls all around - in this case the high walls being the grandeur of the Swiss Alps and the Italian Pre-alps.

After a twenty minute drive up a mountain, there is a very  beautiful spot with a pretty church that inside has various bicycles on display,  as it is dedicated to all champion cyclists.  Nearby on a high pedestal is a statue of the Italian cyclist, Fausto Coppi, who after the Second World War became world champion, winning many "Tour de France" and "Giro d'Italia".  His statue is in this high location as he was also one of the world's best mountain cyclists and was appropriately nicknamed "King of  the Mountain".  On a clear day the view from this location is absolutely breathtaking.
