Trieste

Panorama of Trieste

The people of Trieste are very fortunate as their city has no less than four imposing castles in its vicinity.  It is the home of Italy's largest square, Piazza Unita d'Italia.  Its 70 metre high lighthouse, Faro della Vittoria, has the third longest beam in the world behind New York's and Santo Domingo's lighthouses.  It even has a street, Via della Bora, named after a very strong wind that can travel at 120 miles per hour and a song that is all about this la bora  wind.

Trieste has much history behind it as does the rest of Italy and there are so many places to visit.

Museo Revoltella

The Museo Revoltella can be found at the Piazza Venezia.  Pasquale Revoltella came to Trieste as a young man, made his fortune and left this 19th century building for use as a museum.  Inside you will find a gallery of modern art.  Stunning views of Trieste, its gulf and even some old parts of the town can be seen from the terrace of the museum.

Villa Revoltella

Baron Revoltella also gave his attractive residence with beautifully landscaped parkland to a Lord Mayor of Trieste and told him it was to be used for all the future Lord Mayors.  Villa Revoltella has now become a tourist attraction.  While the house is not open to the public, the gardens alone are well worth a visit.  There is also a small church on the grounds where weddings take place.

Cathedral of

San Giusto

The Cathedral of San Giusto, a well-known landmark of Trieste was constructed in medieval times and is easily recognised on the side of San Giusto Hill.  It is located in front of the castle bearing the same name and was built on the ruins of an old Roman temple.  The San Giusto Castle terrace has fabulous views of Trieste.  Nearby on the hill you will also find a huge war memorial, the third army altar and a war cemetery.

Meet my parents at Miramare Castle

When Maximilian of Habsburg said "All I want from life is a castle with a big garden on a beach"  he wasn't joking.  The Castle of Miramare that was built for him on what must be the most spectacular location in Trieste, was the answer to his dreams.  Unfortunately, he only lived on the ground floor as he died before it was completed in 1860.  There were many stories and legends connected with this beautiful castle and the people of Trieste are delighted with their inheritance.  It is now a museum and is exquisitely furnished inside.

Old Roman Theatre

Some of the other places of interest in Trieste include ... the Old Roman Theatre which was built in the first century AD for gladiators to participate in their contests.  It was later used as a stage for plays, including Greek tragedies and the Teatro Rosseti which is one of Trieste's popular theatres.  It was officially opened with the staging of one of Giuseppe Verdi's operas in 1878.
